Other Considerations

  • An applicant must be a US Citizen or must have a Valid Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
  • New officers will typically begin working on an afternoon shift or night shift(s) in a two manned cruiser (partner)
  • Patrol Officers have the option of wearing an outer carrier vest
  • Can participate in the Winter Whiskers Charity Program, the Pink Patch Project, Akron Cares, and Shop with a Cop Program
  • There will be 365 day probationary period. The probation period starts the day an officer is sworn in.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be within the age range 21 years through 40 years at the time of the written test
  • Be a US Citizen or must have a valid permanent resident card (Green Card)
  • Must have graduated from high school or have a GED
  • Possess a valid driver’s license, free of revocation or suspension
  • Have no felony convictions
  • Not be on probation or parole
  • Be able to safely perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Meet established physical standards under Ohio Law
  • Not be prohibited by law from acquiring, having, carrying, or using firearms

STEP 2 - Testing

    Applicants who pass the written test are placed on an eligible list, in rank order, based on their examination grade and any applicable bonus points. Bonus points may include:
    • Residency
    • Honorably Discharged Veteran
    • Education
  2. Physical Fitness Assessment
    Will be given approximately two months after passing the written exam.
  3. Polygraph Exam
  4. Background Investigation
  5. Command Staff Interview
  6. Conditional Job Offer (PLEASE NOTE: This does NOT guarantee employment)
  7. Medical Exam
    • Drug Screening
    • Psychological Evaluation



STEP 3 - Training

  1. 24 weeks at the Akron Police Department Training Academy (OPOTA Courses)
  2. 13 weeks of "hands-on" Field Training accompanied by a training officer
